Hell-Baby-322x480

Hello my Minions.

Tonight Victoria from The Autodidact in the Attic provides us with a review of the new movie Hell Baby. Thanks Victoria!!!

Leslie Bibb (who is heavily pregnant) has just bought a run-down house in New Orleans with her husband. The house is in a primarily African-American neighbourhood and the new couple, Jack and Vanessa are the Whitest Couple on Earth. Their first night, a neighbour breaks in and tells them that quite a few people have been murdered there.

This is definitely a comedy–there’s no suspenseful build-up–the over-the-top ‘scary’ stuff begins immediately. It isn’t long before Jack (Rob Corddry) works out that something is very wrong with his wife. He worries for the twins she’s carrying.

Luckily, there are some priests in town sent by the Vatican to investigate a murder with religious overtones. They believe the baby is possessed and apply to Rome for permission to do an exorcism. And that’s when Vanessa goes into labour.

There’s a supposedly amusing character. F’resnel (Keegan Michael Key) is the obligatory black guy. Being funny in the way every black guy is in these types of movies. It was more than halfway through before I laughed. There were some amusing moments later, but nothing hilarious and the total was under a dozen.

Overall, it was a huge disappointment, especially since it was written and directed by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon from The State and featured quite a few of the members of the group.

I was hoping for Shaun of the Dead and got something closer to Scary Movie.
