Summer Reading: The Night Circus

The Night Circus

Good Evening my friends. Tonight we discuss a fun little book for your reading pleasure.

The Night Circus is one of those books that pulls you in and doesn’t let you go. The circus changes the people who experience it. It becomes a part of them, a memory, a dream, a snippet of song or a whiff of pipe tobacco carried on the wind with the aromas of caramel, cinnamon, and cider. Once you buy your ticket and enter the gates, you will never be the same.

This is the beautifully written tale of two magicians, a challenge, and a venue. Lush descriptions of fantastical things abound. Although some of the plot lines get a bit convoluted with the skipping forward and backward in time, it all makes sense in the end. Some have criticized the story for being long on description and short on story. I disagree. As I read, trying as I normally do to pay attention to characters so as to keep them straight in my head, I noticed that the narrative kept getting hypnotic and dreamlike. The sights and sounds of the circus took over and rather than following a plot, one was simply watching what went on inside.

It’s this kind of immersive prose that I love the most and it’s the sort of stuff this book is made of. Totally enjoyable.

Scarydad Updates and News

Hello there everyone. I must apologize for my lack of instructional tutorials this week. Every now and then one must flush the lab of the things that just won’t die and set traps for new things. That’s what’s been going on here. In addition, Spawn of Scarydad opened one of my cages and let something out. I’m not sure what it is (or was) but it seems to not want to go back into the cage nor does it enjoy being poked with a sharp stick.

Kids and their pets, I tell you!

Anyway, at this point the lab and the castle are clean. We will be having some guests for dinner tomorrow, so I get to lobotomize some pumpkins and Bride will be mixing spices and victuals for the feast. That reminds me that I need to apply electricity to the battery in my camera so I can capture the moments for to share with you. I guess Spawn will continue to poke at whatever that miserable thing in her closet is.

In closing, I ask you to do something today that scares you. Because Pennywise

Good day!

Wednesday Picdump

Good evening my friends. I’m going to have to make it brief tonight. It’s been a very long day for old Scarydad and tomorrow looks to be similar.

“But Scarydad,” you say, “A day can be no longer than 24 hours. Your day can’t be any longer than anyone else’s!”

This is only partially true. Since the accident, however, I sometimes randomly experience days ranging between 27 and 42 and 1/2 hours. If today ends at midnight, it will have lasted nearly 34 hours. It’s weird, I know. I don’t get it either. However, I am still sleepy so I’m going to try to slumber for a time.

Good night.

Scarydad Project: Flying Yard Ghosts

Ghost

Good evening my beloved. Tonight I will show you how to make floating ghosts for your yard haunt. These are very simple to make and have a very cool floating/flying effect when the wind blows. Here’s how to make them:

Make a Scarecrow on the cheap

Scarecrow

Good evening my friends! Tonight I will show you how to construct a wonderfully inexpensive little scarecrow for your yard haunt but first I must thank The Morrigan for stepping up in a time of crisis. You see, your friendly neighborhood Scarydad was attempting to revive something he found in the road and he learned that more electricity is not always the answer to an unresponsive specimen. My electronic portal to your world was temporarily shut down until after “sometime between 12 & 5 PM.”

That portal has been reopened so let’s get to work, shall we?

It’s Decoration Time!!!

Halloween

September is gone and so is summer! It’s time for pumpkins, skulls, witches, and vampires! It’s time to choose costumes and decorate our haunts! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It’s OCTOBER!!!

I was able to get part one of what I hope will be a massive yard haunt up yesterday. The images are still being drying in the dark room, so we must be patient. In the coming days I will guide you through the process and show you how to make many fun things.

Oh, I’m so excited I could just KILL someone!

(And I have just the perfect place for the body!)

Home from New Orleans- What a city!

New Orleans

Good Evening Minions and Happy October! I apologize for the span of time between the last post and this one. You see, I was compelled to travel to the most haunted city on Earth to collect stories and pictures for you, my beloved. Unfortunately I had both crappy internet and a serious case of the being on vacation and wasted on Bourbon Street to properly keep up with the daily business.

But, I am back! I have a camera full of haunting images and a few great stories that I promise to tell you tomorrow. In the meantime I must go perform the “dad” part of Scarydad and put my #1 minion to bed. Enjoy this picture of a skeleton breaking out of a coffin and say a few prayers. You will need them when I return tomorrow.
