World War Z

Good evening Minions. Our favorite season approaches. Soon the evenings will be cool and the air will carry the scent of burning leaves and pumpkin spice. However, Autumn does not arrive until September 22nd. Therefore you still have time to finish a book or two for Summer Reading. Tonight’s selection is World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks.

The reason this book is so scary is because it is so real. Rather than a linear narrative, World War Z is the collected accounts of survivors of a world-wide zombie apocalypse. The characters tell their stories- doctors, soldiers, common citizens; all are represented and their stories pieced together tell a heart-wrenching tale of panic, fear, love, loss, and hope. These people are so real and their stories so compelling that you almost forget you are reading a zombie story. Seriously, you could be reading an account of a recent natural disaster in your local paper for as real as it all seems.

Finally, this book is scary. Not only is the world overrun by zombies, but governments, armies, and our good old-fashioned hate and mistrust for one another cause warnings to be missed, opportunities ignored, and literally billions of people are caught in the middle of the bickering until someone realizes that the only way to survive is to give up our humanity entirely.

Brooks attention to detail is impressive and his ability to bring his vision completely to life are the marks of a master storyteller. I sincerely hope he continues writing stories.

Scarydad review: **** Four stars.
