Good evening my beloved Minions! I trust you are well. I have returned from my vacation in the most haunted city in America to bring you a happy and refreshed Scarydad who is brimming with ideas and upcoming projects. We’re already past the halfway point to Halloween! Time to get back to work!!!
So tonight I’m going to show you how I make hands for my various creatures. The tutorial is a basic human hand but the technique can be used to make virtually any size hands for any type of monster, so let’s get creative…
Ingredients:
- Drawing or graph paper
- Masking Tape
- Ruler
- Wire Cutters
- Pliers (2-pairs preferred)
- Baling Wire
- Paper
Begin by tracing your hands onto a piece of paper. Since I wanted a template for different size hands, I traced Bride’s and Spawn’s hands too.Use the ruler to measure the lengths of the fingers, then add up the lengths to determine how much wire to cut for each hand.
Start at the middle finger and bend the wire using the drawing as a reference for finger length.
Twist each finger to strengthen it.
When you have the 4 fingers completed, make a triangle with the wire, so that the twist lines up between the middle and ring fingers, or is centered. Twist the wire here a couple extra times for strength. This is where the wrist and the thumb meet, so any extra twists you can add will make your hand stronger. Make your thumb, again using the drawing as a template for proportion. Remember, the line drawing of your hand includes fleshy areas. If you do it correctly, you should have a well-proportioned hand. Repeat all previous steps for the other hand. Unless your haunt is Captain Hook, Ash, or Bespin Luke Skywalker Wrap your hand in paper and tape. Remember, the more you wrap, the fleshier the hands, so wrap till your heart’s content. Just make sure to do everything evenly so that one finger isn’t fat and another skinny. That just looks weird. The tail at the wrist is for use in attaching the hand to the arm. You can bend them out for a friction grip or make a loop and secure them from the elbow with another piece of wire. This hand is strong enough to hold a knife. Or maybe something a little more sinister.Project complete! Now the hands just wait for me to make something to attach them to. Sort of like a reverse Edward Scissorhands.
