How “Collectors” have ruined collecting stuff

One Saturday morning in the very early eighties, I was watching cartoons and eating Honey Nut Cheerios. It was still dark outside and my parents and sister weren’t up yet and this commercial came on and changed my life:

At some point I believe I had just about every MOTU figure and vehicle there was to get and I had duplicates of some of them. Later on it was Gi-Joe, Thundercats, Super Powers, Transformers, and then Rambo. (I already had a bunch of Star Wars stuff.)

Superman

Well, I guess the new Man of Steel movie was pretty good. Or so I’ve heard. Unfortunately I don’t get out to the movies very often these days. It’s something I doubt I’ll be able to remedy any time soon as I’m about to double up on my no time for movie watchingness. It’s a rough life.

Long before MoS came out the net was a flutter with discussions about Superman and how they were going to make him cool again. They had their gritty Batman, true, but Batman is just one guy to be taking on The Avengers (as a team and as individuals), the X-Men, and Spiderman.

Just what was Warner going to do to make Supes compelling? I haven’t seen the movie so I’m not sure but from the looks of it, I guess they came up with “angsty.” And it’s a big hit and everyone seems happy with it all so I suppose that’s that.

Except it’s not that. What’s going to happen is that they’re going to have to find a way to keep him interesting now to keep the franchise going and to do that someone is going to have to get creative. And what’s the best way to develop a godlike character that’s completely invincible and has an incorruptible morality? (more…)

Scarydad’s 200th Post!!!

scarydad.com

Hey there loyal SD Minions! Tonight we have a special episode: The 200th blog post on scarydad.com! Roughly 100 episodes ago we celebrated our 100th Episode Extravaganza and we thought that was impressive. This almost double the accomplishment, so I think we should be at least 2/3 more excited, don’t you?

The first post went live about 13 lucky months ago and since then, well let me just say it’s been a fun and eventful year.

Interview with Heather Gleason: My Eclectic Mind

scarydad.com

I’ve probably mentioned before that it’s really hot where I live. Halloween, outside of the regular fun it brings, also means that we can go outside and play again. It’s the harvest and the promise of holidays, cold air, wood smoke, and festivals. It’s not just a day or a month; it’s a feeling. Unfortunately, that feeling is seasonal and, for me anyway, gone all too quickly.

So, I spend my time looking for things that keep that feeling alive. I scour the internet looking for stuff that truly defines the meaning and the spirit of my favorite time of year. A while back I was doing some scouring and I came across an artist who captures both the meaning and the spirit perfectly. When I saw Heather Gleason’s art I immediately felt a cool northerly breeze and caught the scent of caramel and cinnamon and burning leaves…

Interview with Marshall and Kat from the Boys and Ghouls Podcast!!!

DSCN5485

We have a very special episode tonight.

See, in my alter-ego role as “responsible adult,” I do a job that requires a lot of driving. A LOT of driving. And I’ve been doing what I do for more than a decade so as you can imagine, rock blocks, morning DJ banter, and talk radio all hit my last nerve about nine years ago.

Thank ye Gods for the internet!

Because of this magical entity I can reach out to the ether and pull material ’til my evil heart’s content. I can listen to audio books, college lectures, old radio shows, etc. One of the shows I really enjoy is the Boys and Ghouls podcast. The hosts, Marshall and Kat choose a topic, typically a sub-genre or theme of horror film and discuss several films within the topic. I really enjoy their show and I was really excited when they agreed to an interview:

Scarydad News, Updates, and More

Hello there all my wonderful minions!

Well, July is almost gone and that certain trick of the light is there to tell us that Fall will soon be here. I cannot wait. The shop has been essentially shuttered since early June because it is simply impossible to work. I sweat so much the tools slip from my hands. And all the experiments are grumpy too. No good.

I did get one of these Skeletor Vinyl Figures and he’s about as cool as he looks.

And if you haven’t already, you need to get over to Southern Gothica and order one of Amber’s custom felt dolls. I got one of them and I can say that the quality is nothing short of amazing.

In other news, I’ve been working on a couple of stories. One was supposed to be a short story but it kind of got out of hand so I have to see where it goes. Another is a children’s story that isn’t scary but is pretty fun. As soon as I’m finished with it I will be looking for an illustrator, so if you know somebody please forward me their information.

Well, that’s about it for tonight. Tomorrow we have a really great interview with Marshall and Kat from the Boys and Ghouls Podcast, so please make sure you catch that.

Interview: Chris from Austin Hot Mods

Hello there my good and faithful Minions! I hope all is well.

Today we are going to do something just a little different. As some of you know I spent many a magical night on stage as a founding member of the costumed super group Thunderpants here in Houston. Although I no longer play out anymore, I still enjoy a good jam session from time to time.

Well, a friend of mine recently started a side business modifying foot pedals for guitar players at an affordable price. And though his interests are not exactly horror-themed, he is a fellow maker and I think what he’s doing is really cool. So over the weekend I sat down with Chris from Austin Hot Mods to see what this whole thing is about.

And with that, please welcome Chris from Austin Hot Mods.
