Spooky & Fun Halloween Jewelry

Today we have a guest post by Claire Thomas. Claire is a lean mean crafting machine. When she’s not whipping out everything from jewelry to repurposed furniture she is gardening with her daughter.

Three of the best things about Halloween include candy (duh), costumes (double duh) and an excuse to wear strange and / or creepy jewelry. I’ll show you some of my favorites I’ve seen around Etsy, and give you the creative option to make them yourself.

This one will require just a few supplies. Bust out your jewelry making pliers (Wubbers makes the best set), black (half hard) wrapping wire with a chain to match it. You will also need any orange flat, circular bead. A yellow vintage button might work too. First, leave the wrapping wire uncut so as not to waste it. (more…)

Scarecrow Festival

IMG_3770

Good evening everyone. Over the weekend I attended the Scarecrow Festival in Chappell Hill, Texas. What is the Scarecrow Festival, you ask?

Chappell Hill is a tiny town northwest of Houston. The festival comprises the entire town. There’s all the typical festival trappings: Turkey Legs, Beer, Funnel Cakes, Live Music, Arts & Crafts, and Pony Rides. During the Scarecrow festival, residents decorate their houses for Halloween and there are Scarecrows all over the place. It’s a lot of fun and we try to go every year.

Here are a few pics I snapped between turkey legs and funnel cakes.

Good times indeed. (more…)

I’m Angela Johnson, a keen collector of craft supplies and belt buckles. I spend a lot of time tending to my huge organic garden, walking my dog and writing about my addiction to crafting for hairbowcenter.com.

Halloween is almost here! I can’t believe it! As my favorite holiday ever, I find myself at the height of my giddy excitement as we get nearer to All Hallows’ Eve. I like to go all out with decorations, parties and costumes. Here are a few simple tips for even the most craft-challenged of observers. (more…)

I Want This

Some of you know that I often have guest posts published over at Dumb White Husband.  That’s because the site is awesome and I’m honored to be featured there. Ben, the original dumb white husband wrote a serial about how dumb white husbands deal with the zombie uprising. Dumb White Husbands vs. Zombies: The Zomnibus is the collected parts of the serial. I haven’t read it yet because I’ve had too much on my plate. But if it’s like any of his other books, I know it’ll be hilarious. I’m going to hit Ben up for an autographed copy. The rest of you just click the links and buy books until you run out of money. Do it now. (more…)

AHHHH!

Hello there Minions!

Sorry for no post tonight. I got caught up writing this thing and forgot that I hadn’t written something for this thing!

However, I did write this other thing that’s up at Dumb White Husband right now and I wrote yet another thing that’s up over there too.

In fact, you should probably just spend lots of time over at DWH and see all they have going on. Ben just finished The Zomnibus, a book about dumb white husbands who fight zombies.

Well, that’s it for now. Back to the thing I was doing before.

Legend-Of-Jack-O-Lantern-Wallpaper

I don’t know why but lately I’ve been hearing a lot of people complaining about the availability of Halloween stuff in stores. This year the complaints are more heartfelt; the frustration apparent.

This completely baffles me. And here’s why:

I live in Houston. For the geographically challenged, that’s in southeast Texas. For most of the year the temperature is higher than 100 degrees and relative humidity hovers around 100%. The air is teeming with mosquitoes, almost year-round. It is not unheard of to be in shorts and a t-shirt and sweating on Christmas day around here. If it ever happens to snow, even for a few minutes, it shuts the city down. That’s how un-used to cold weather we are here. 8-9 months out of the year we live in a steamy, soupy, buggy swamp where the hot air is so thick, it’s difficult to breathe. Autumn and Winter, rather than being seasons, are simply waves of cool and cold fronts between hot days. Spring is just hot.

The day after Labor Day you typically see Fall-themed or Halloween stuff being put out at retail. That’s pretty common. And every time I see it it makes me happy.

It makes me happy because it’s a promise to the eventual end of 20+ consecutive days of triple-digit heat. It makes me happy because the holidays are coming and the holidays typically mean time off from work, seeing family, and getting food and presents.

Look, I realize that holidays are over-commercialized. If you don’t like that, then make your own costume. Make your own treats. Make your own decorations. Then take a picture of your creation and send it in. That’s why we’re here!

Oh yeah, and another thing, lady: Lighten up. Halloween is awesome.

Scarydad Review: The Dark by Lemony Snicket

The Dark

Tonight we will be discussing The Dark by Lemony Snicket, but we will be doing it a little differently from the typical review format. This review comes in the form of a story…

A few days ago Spawn of Scarydad and I found ourselves wandering the aisles of a large bookstore. This particular bookseller also carries toys and games and the children’s section has a table with some little toy trains that Spawn loves to play with.

As she played with the trains I wandered around looking at books until The Dark caught my eye. I sat down on a footstool and began to read. (more…)

Guest Post for a Great Cause: Tough Mudder for Wounded Warrior Project

woundedwarrior_1

So, a friend of mine is training for the Tough Mudder race to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and he asked if I would share a link and/or a blurb about it for him. Of course, I agreed. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought he needed more than just a blurb, so I asked if he wouldn’t mind having a full post.

We have a lot of fun talking about the darker things here. The men and women who are helped by this charity have seen horrors we can’t even begin to imagine. And they stared them right in the face, willingly, so that we can do what we do every day.

Please take a few seconds to read Collin’s story, then click the hell out of the links below.

I became aware of the Wounded Warrior Project shortly after I made the transition from the Marine Corps back to civilian life back in 2003. As it happened, I was one of the lucky ones in that was able to return home with no physical damage and my mind relatively unaffected. I also had a family to return to and a reasonably optimistic employment outlook. (more…)
