A funny thing happened on the way to the keyboard

Seems a couple months went by without me noticing. I don’t know how that happens. Years ago I was listening to Coast to Coast with Art Bell and the guest he had that night explained that the world was like a tape dispenser and that over time the years peel off and leave a smaller roll that then peels off faster and faster till the inevitable end. According to this guest, we were in the really fast part of the peel and heading for oblivion.

I don’t know if that’s true, but everything sue seems faster since Sequel came to live with us. Seems I’m twice as busy, time travels twice as fast, and I get half as much done. Oh well. The half I get done is pretty cool, so I guess I can’t complain.

So what has happened since last we spoke?

Summer hit like a bomb. It’s so hot and sticky and buggy here that I’m pretty much banished from the shop until September. I have taken a renewed interest in my comic book collection and have begun to acquire several old horror comics from the 70’s. That’s been a lot of fun.

I’ve been watching Daredevil on Netflix. I can only marathon an episode or two at a time because small children monopolize the television. but I like it. You should check it out.

Sequel got glasses and she is the cutest little kid ever to do the zombie walk across the living room.

I’ve still been working on that damn book. That’s where I’ve been and that’s what I do. But where here I tend to write rather quickly, over there I write slow as hell. I’ve tried all the techniques to get me over the slow writing syndrome, but I think it’s just how I do it. I’ll muddle through this one and then the second one will go faster and the third faster still, and on and on until I’m the fastest and bestest book writer on the planet. But for now, I’m still doing the slow thing.

Well, that’s it for now. It was nice talking to you.

Scarydad News, Updates, & More

Hello there all my good and faithful Minions. I hope this weblog post finds you well. As you are aware, I had taken a little time off from regular posting. The holidays were tough and to be honest, I didn’t have much to say. I decided it was best to shutter the site for a little while and get my head back together.

In the meantime, I have actually been pleasantly busy with projects and such. I’ve written a couple of short stories that are in final edits at the moment, I’ve done quite a bit of miscellaneous woodworking stuff. I did a podcast episode with a friend and have been thinking of some ways to expand the Scarydad brand in coming months. Then it occurred to me that I probably ought to reach out and let you all know that I’m still here. Well, I am and if everything goes as planned, then you can expect regular posts again.

As always, we are open to submissions and project ideas from readers. If you have a great idea for a story, let me know at scarydad@scarydad.com.

Have a good evening. I look forward to talking with you soon.

Happy Birthday to Scarydad.com

Hello there yon Minions. A happy Monday to you all. Tonight we celebrate the birthday of Scarydad.com: The Website.

A lot has happened this past 365 days. We had a baby, I had surgery on my knee (on Halloween no less!), I’ve been writing a book- a few pages every night, in fact. I’ve also been regularly writing for Dumb White Husband. On the personal side, we’ve had events and adventures seemingly every weekend and when I have had a chance to get out into the lab, I have a list of things needing to be done that makes off-season Halloween prep a hard sell to the ever-patient Bride of Scarydad.

But that’s all about to change. The other day as we talked over a nice bloody steak, she mentioned that the year was already half-gone and what were my plans for Halloween because I hadn’t been talking about it much.

Well, I’ve been slowly buying parts and pieces to have plenty of raw materials for projects. I’ve bookmarked several really cool ideas on Pinterest and other places around the web and have some pretty nice projects in the works. Halloween is on a Friday this year so I plan to have an epic party as well. Spawn of Scarydad has been asking for Halloween since November 1, so that should be fun. I will have hopefully finished my book by then and will have freed up time for writing in my little piece of the internet more often than I am able to do now.

So, things are looking great. I’m busier than ever and have great plans for the second half of the year. Thanks for sticking around!

Scarydad News, Updates, and More…

Hello again everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve done regular posting so I figured it was time I let you all in on what’s been going on here at Castle Scarydad.

First up, the family. Spawn and Sequel are doing well, thank you. Sequel is already almost 5 months old! Time flies when you are extraordinarily busy.

Spawn’s cheap yaffa-block book shelves finally collapsed under the weight of too many books so I went ahead and built her a real one. She asked if she could pick the color so yesterday we went to yon Home Depot and she picked out a dark purple. Here’s a picture of her purple shelf in progress:

It’s either sideways or the kid has some really tall books. I’ll leave you to imagine which.

Next, I’ve been retooling the shop a bit. I only get a few minutes here and there to do extracurricular activities and lately those activities involve reading anarchistic philosophy tomes and watching Care Bears. However, when I do get a minute, I’ve been adding storage and improving access.

I have an old Gi-Joe Sky Striker jet in the attic. I’m thinking of hanging it up in here. What do you think?

A week or so ago I was home sick from work and in addition to getting some much needed rest and a little bit of writing done, I also managed to see V/H/S 2.

I liked it overall. Will do a review of them both in the next few days. And finally,

If you haven’t seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you need to go see it. It is probably not quite as badass as the Avengers, but that’s only because there’s no Hulk in this one. It is a really, really good movie though.

A gentle rain falls as I…

…sit down to write tonight. It seems as if autumn has finally arrived. It’s cool and grey and the perfect weather to place letters one in front of the other. The only problem has been the drugs. Over the past few days I’ve been affected by the pain medicine and I think I haven’t fully recovered from the anesthesia. So basically whenever I sit down to write something I cannot type. Then, if I manage to make the fingers behave, the words on the page have been the ramblings of a second-grader with ADD and spelling problems. Not my normal way of doing things.

So October is 5-days gone now. The Halloween decorations have all been taken down to make way for Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff. I’m really excited about the holidays this year. Less than three weeks until Spawn of Scarydad Part II The Sequel is released and I can’t wait.

Spawn of Scarydad loved Halloween, by the way. She dressed as Snow White and charmed all the neighbors out of their candy and goodies. Then she ran around the cul-de-sac about 15 times before passing out cold in her costume. I manned the candy bowl. It wasn’t too bad for having had major surgery earlier in the day. Given the circumstances, Halloween was actually pretty good.

So, I’m announcing something of a hiatus but not really. See, writing for the blog is something I really enjoy and something I look forward to doing each day. But at the same time, I’ve sort of built up this expectation of myself to stay disciplined and write stuff several times a week, even if I’ve got nothing going on. That is totally not a problem. Some of the more fun posts and projects have come from evenings where I sat down with no idea what I was going to write about. It’s not that, it’s that very soon, I will be dealing with a newborn and a 3-year-old and a recovering Bride. It’s not that I don’t want to write several times a week, it’s that I don’t know if I’ll realistically be able to.

But what I don’t want to do is announce a “hiatus” and intentionally not write for however long. I’d rather just keep it open-ended and do what I feel like. If I feel like writing every day and I am able to, then that’s what I’ll do. More likely, however, I think you can expect one or two posts per week or longer times between posts. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens. I just felt like warning you that posting frequency might get inconsistent and that’s why.

Well, that’s it for me for tonight.

Take care.

Scarydad News, Updates & More

bone-saws-650Hello my beloved Minions.

It seems as if every time I sit down to speak with you something else comes up. I have to say this year has been pretty busy so far. In addition, we’ve been getting a lot of rain lately which is good for the plants, not so good for decorating Castle Scarydad. But, we’ve had pumpkin this and pumpkin that, candy, and overall the season has been pretty good.

That is, until I discovered I have to have knee surgery and the only available date is, you guessed it, Halloween.

I’m pretty bummed about it. It sort of took all the wind out of my sails for adding decorations, knowing that I’ll be handicapped when it’s time to take them down. But I need to get the knee fixed and I certainly don’t want to do it with an infant in the house.

For all you worried moms out there, I made ’em out of plywood, not steel.

In other news, over the weekend I helped a buddy of mine build a pair of swords for his kid’s Legolas costume. Chris from Austin Hot Mods filmed the project and it will soon be posted on YouTube. As we move through and past the holidays, I plan to begin taking custom orders and commissions for things such as this. If you are interested, let me know and I’m sure I can make something for you.

I am also refinishing a guitar. It was old and beat up and I thought I could make it a lot scarier. This one is a work in progress but I’ll certainly share the results with you when I’m done.

Well, that’s about it for tonight. Sorry to leave you so soon but the internet keeps going in and out and making things difficult for me. We’ll talk soon. I promise.

Scarydad News, Updates, and More

Hello there all my wonderful minions!

Well, July is almost gone and that certain trick of the light is there to tell us that Fall will soon be here. I cannot wait. The shop has been essentially shuttered since early June because it is simply impossible to work. I sweat so much the tools slip from my hands. And all the experiments are grumpy too. No good.

I did get one of these Skeletor Vinyl Figures and he’s about as cool as he looks.

And if you haven’t already, you need to get over to Southern Gothica and order one of Amber’s custom felt dolls. I got one of them and I can say that the quality is nothing short of amazing.

In other news, I’ve been working on a couple of stories. One was supposed to be a short story but it kind of got out of hand so I have to see where it goes. Another is a children’s story that isn’t scary but is pretty fun. As soon as I’m finished with it I will be looking for an illustrator, so if you know somebody please forward me their information.

Well, that’s about it for tonight. Tomorrow we have a really great interview with Marshall and Kat from the Boys and Ghouls Podcast, so please make sure you catch that.

Scarydad News and Updates

Hello faithful Minions.

It seems like it’s been a while since we talked. I’ll admit that the nightly bedtime stories have been a bit lacking of late and there is no good excuse for it. Actually, there’s lots of good excuses, but no entertaining ones. Like I haven’t been held hostage by a strange race of mutant squid people or anything. Although that would be awesome and if it ever does happen I’ll be sure to snap a pic for you.

In the meantime, let me fill you in a bit on what’s been going on here at Castle Scarydad.

Spawn of Scarydad recently graduated to her big girl bed. She thought it was a really good idea until it got dark, then she changed her mind. Her wails occasionally threaten to wake the dead, meaning that those of us that are only mostly dead are dead tired.

When I haven’t been doing something else I’ve been reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. So far, so good. Very colorful language that immerses you into the story. Although I’m not finished yet, unless there’s something really stupid to ruin it in the third act, I think it’s probably safe to recommend this book to anyone who likes magic.

The ultimate way to cook fish is like this: In a skillet, heat up some sesame oil. Place the fish skin down into the oil. Add a bit of garlic salt and pepper and allow to cook until the fish is white. Serve with your favorite sides. It’s that easy, and it tastes better than anything you’ll get in a restaurant. You’re welcome.

I got Trick r’ Treat at Half Price Books for $4.00 and that’s pretty cool.

Tiny Dancer is pretty easy to play on the guitar but it’s hard to remember all the words.

And I think that’s about all I have for tonight.

Now where’d I put that…

Oh. Hello. Sorry, I didn’t see you there.

I know, I know. I’m supposed to be telling you entertaining stories and showing you how to do things. But I can explain.

See, I’m in the middle of doing lots of really neat things, but unfortunately, as my ambition has grown, so has the amount of time needed to complete the projects.

I swear to you that I have been out in the lab almost every night doing really cool things just for you. It’s just that there isn’t much to tell. Sometimes you have to let the corpse ripen a bit before you can move on with the project and watching decay is little more interesting than watching paint dry.

I’ll be out in force soon, though. Soon enough it’ll be too damn hot to go outside anyway.

That’s it for today. Tune in tomorrow to find out…
