Happy Birthday to Scarydad.com

Hello there yon Minions. A happy Monday to you all. Tonight we celebrate the birthday of Scarydad.com: The Website.

A lot has happened this past 365 days. We had a baby, I had surgery on my knee (on Halloween no less!), I’ve been writing a book- a few pages every night, in fact. I’ve also been regularly writing for Dumb White Husband. On the personal side, we’ve had events and adventures seemingly every weekend and when I have had a chance to get out into the lab, I have a list of things needing to be done that makes off-season Halloween prep a hard sell to the ever-patient Bride of Scarydad.

But that’s all about to change. The other day as we talked over a nice bloody steak, she mentioned that the year was already half-gone and what were my plans for Halloween because I hadn’t been talking about it much.

Well, I’ve been slowly buying parts and pieces to have plenty of raw materials for projects. I’ve bookmarked several really cool ideas on Pinterest and other places around the web and have some pretty nice projects in the works. Halloween is on a Friday this year so I plan to have an epic party as well. Spawn of Scarydad has been asking for Halloween since November 1, so that should be fun. I will have hopefully finished my book by then and will have freed up time for writing in my little piece of the internet more often than I am able to do now.

So, things are looking great. I’m busier than ever and have great plans for the second half of the year. Thanks for sticking around!

Scarydad News, Updates, and More…

Hello again everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve done regular posting so I figured it was time I let you all in on what’s been going on here at Castle Scarydad.

First up, the family. Spawn and Sequel are doing well, thank you. Sequel is already almost 5 months old! Time flies when you are extraordinarily busy.

Spawn’s cheap yaffa-block book shelves finally collapsed under the weight of too many books so I went ahead and built her a real one. She asked if she could pick the color so yesterday we went to yon Home Depot and she picked out a dark purple. Here’s a picture of her purple shelf in progress:

It’s either sideways or the kid has some really tall books. I’ll leave you to imagine which.

Next, I’ve been retooling the shop a bit. I only get a few minutes here and there to do extracurricular activities and lately those activities involve reading anarchistic philosophy tomes and watching Care Bears. However, when I do get a minute, I’ve been adding storage and improving access.

I have an old Gi-Joe Sky Striker jet in the attic. I’m thinking of hanging it up in here. What do you think?

A week or so ago I was home sick from work and in addition to getting some much needed rest and a little bit of writing done, I also managed to see V/H/S 2.

I liked it overall. Will do a review of them both in the next few days. And finally,

If you haven’t seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you need to go see it. It is probably not quite as badass as the Avengers, but that’s only because there’s no Hulk in this one. It is a really, really good movie though.

Scarydad News, Updates & More

bone-saws-650Hello my beloved Minions.

It seems as if every time I sit down to speak with you something else comes up. I have to say this year has been pretty busy so far. In addition, we’ve been getting a lot of rain lately which is good for the plants, not so good for decorating Castle Scarydad. But, we’ve had pumpkin this and pumpkin that, candy, and overall the season has been pretty good.

That is, until I discovered I have to have knee surgery and the only available date is, you guessed it, Halloween.

I’m pretty bummed about it. It sort of took all the wind out of my sails for adding decorations, knowing that I’ll be handicapped when it’s time to take them down. But I need to get the knee fixed and I certainly don’t want to do it with an infant in the house.

For all you worried moms out there, I made ’em out of plywood, not steel.

In other news, over the weekend I helped a buddy of mine build a pair of swords for his kid’s Legolas costume. Chris from Austin Hot Mods filmed the project and it will soon be posted on YouTube. As we move through and past the holidays, I plan to begin taking custom orders and commissions for things such as this. If you are interested, let me know and I’m sure I can make something for you.

I am also refinishing a guitar. It was old and beat up and I thought I could make it a lot scarier. This one is a work in progress but I’ll certainly share the results with you when I’m done.

Well, that’s about it for tonight. Sorry to leave you so soon but the internet keeps going in and out and making things difficult for me. We’ll talk soon. I promise.

Scarydad News and Updates

Hello faithful Minions.

It seems like it’s been a while since we talked. I’ll admit that the nightly bedtime stories have been a bit lacking of late and there is no good excuse for it. Actually, there’s lots of good excuses, but no entertaining ones. Like I haven’t been held hostage by a strange race of mutant squid people or anything. Although that would be awesome and if it ever does happen I’ll be sure to snap a pic for you.

In the meantime, let me fill you in a bit on what’s been going on here at Castle Scarydad.

Spawn of Scarydad recently graduated to her big girl bed. She thought it was a really good idea until it got dark, then she changed her mind. Her wails occasionally threaten to wake the dead, meaning that those of us that are only mostly dead are dead tired.

When I haven’t been doing something else I’ve been reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. So far, so good. Very colorful language that immerses you into the story. Although I’m not finished yet, unless there’s something really stupid to ruin it in the third act, I think it’s probably safe to recommend this book to anyone who likes magic.

The ultimate way to cook fish is like this: In a skillet, heat up some sesame oil. Place the fish skin down into the oil. Add a bit of garlic salt and pepper and allow to cook until the fish is white. Serve with your favorite sides. It’s that easy, and it tastes better than anything you’ll get in a restaurant. You’re welcome.

I got Trick r’ Treat at Half Price Books for $4.00 and that’s pretty cool.

Tiny Dancer is pretty easy to play on the guitar but it’s hard to remember all the words.

And I think that’s about all I have for tonight.
